How to achieve this look

Ive looked all over and cant seem to find a ligthing setup that would help me achive this look. Any ideas on how to setup up this shot? Beauty dish and shot from above with a vingette added in post maybe? Thanks for the help.

This picture is from a capture of an image i saw online so i apologize if i dont credit the owner.

You can either link to the page where you saw it OR you can right-click the image and select "open image in new tab" (or new window) and then copy the link which displays _just_ the image (btw, that second method doesn't always work... some sites block that.)

I found it. The problem was that i just took a screen capture of it while looking through google images and browsing history at work gets erased on a daily basis. But here it is. Thanks.

The main thing you do it photoshop the crap out of her face. It looks like someone whacked her with Portrait Pro or whatever that hideous thing that's all over the net is.

The light on her face only superficially matches the light in the rest of the frame. It's more or less from the same direction, insofar as any directionality has been left by the photochop, but the levels and color are completely different.

Looks like the model is lit with a large diffused source just above and left of camera position, with a bare flash on camera firing very little just for a bit of fill - and putting that little intense catchlight dead center in her pupils.

Background appears to be lit separately, and I'll guess white seamless lit with a gridded strobe with a aqua-colored gel on or in front of it, possibly also flagged off from the model.

As for the soft look of the skin on the face, could be software, could be Maybelline, could be a bit of soft focus involved as well. Either way, I like it, but as you can see from other responses, it's not to everyone's taste. What matters is if you like it.

I'm noticing what amolitor noticed... I see a soft light on her back, but follow that down and look at her arm in the foreground... the light is basically at her back... UNTIL you look at her face. The lighting on her face doesn't match the rest of the lighting.

I do see the shadow of her chin -- suggesting that they've used a close light above and left (not behind) shining down on her face and _only_ her face and not a particularly diffused light.

Don't forget to graffiti the image with your watermark to complete the look.

Nothing like getting the straight dope right from the source, so I went ahead and emailed the photographer with the question about lighting, and linked her to this thread. Here's her reply:

Hi Buck,
Thanks for the heads up, I am happy to spill the beans. I am not a member of the forum, so you can repost if you would like.

It is actually none of those lighting situations. It is just ambient sunlight with an on camera fill flash for the catch light in her eyes, I am on a second story balcony looking down at her standing just at the edge of her pool, that is where the aqua blue comes in.

And as for amolitor… she has amazing skin so didn’t have to “PS the crap” out of her face, thanks for being snide. Buck you were right, maybe it’s Maybelline…her date’s face, now that is another story, that took some work to get them to match ; )
