Howdy everybody!
So, I understand the general concept of HDR. Several exposures put together to use different parts of them for one image, usually in software designed to do this. The thing is, I've never been a fan of pukey, dirty looking messes of unreal color. If I can look at an image and say "HDR," it dosen't do it for me.
However, I know there's a somewhat similar concept (Can't think of what it's called) for using multiple exposures to round out clipping in higher-contrast settings. Can somebody tell me what this is called, and what software one uses to do it? I'd appreciate it!

Photomatix is a popular software that will do it. You can also do it manually with layers and masks in photoshop.
