Can others edit my Photos
Photos OK to edit
I got frustrated with my Sony ZV1M2 because it is useless for video on warm, sunny days. It shuts down in a hurry because of overheating, with no warning, so I got a Powershot V1.

I took a photo of my son this morning, and I really like it, but when I tried to edit the CR3 (raw) file in Affinity and Photoshop Elements 2024, I was not able to get anywhere.

Elements was worthless because it will not open the CR3. It tells me to install the Camera RAW plugin, and when I do that and reopen the file, it tells me to install the RAW plugin. AI thinks this is because Adobe has not created a profile for the Powershot.

Affinity was worthless because it added horrible vignetting, and it has no lens profile to fix it. Manual efforts were useless.

How would you get rid of the vignetting? The JPG is great, but I can't keep relying on JPG's.

Convert the file to DNG and Elements/ACR will open it. Adobe has a free DNG converter you can download here: https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/using/adobe-dng-converter.html

If you have the same problem because Adobe doesn't support your camera, try the manufacturer's website and see if they have software to download.

Thanks for the replies.

There is no shroud. This is a handy camera with a built-in lens cover that opens and closes.

I asked AI before I came here, and I was told that because this was a recently-released camera, the software people had not caught up with the lens. I was told Affinity relies on a site called Lensfun, and Lensfun did not yet have a profile for this camera.

AI suggested all kinds of useless fixes, and I wasted a lot of time on them last night, so when it finally got around to telling me to download the DNG converter, it was too late to try it. I am giving it a shot today. I thought maybe someone here would know more than AI, but it's starting to look like the only real answer is to wait for Canon, Adobe, Lensfun, and Affinity to catch up.

I will see if the DNG program gets me anywhere. I'm surprised that editing programs have limits on them.

I don't think Lensfun is going to help. I just checked their list of supported lenses, and it says almost none of the Powershots is supported for lens correction.

Every raw file is proprietary and must be supplied by the manufacturer or reverse-engineered for the editor to work with the file. That is one reason why a subscription that includes ongoing updates to raw editors is so handy. Sometimes it takes a while to catch up, and I don't know how much priority the limited version of ACR that comes with Elements gets.

The DGN converter got me to where I can use Elements, and somehow or other, I managed to get the vignetting erased. Affinity is still useless, which is too bad, because Elements is written as though Adobe were trying to prevent people from using it. I recall the old Elements from two decades ago, and it was completely intuitive. I loved that program.

Another interesting thing is that Elements has no help file. They send you to a website that is very badly designed. If you are smart enough to get answers from the website, you are probably smart enough to work the program without help.

Should I just convert all my CR3 files and delete the originals? They appear to be useless.

AI said to download Canon's proprietary program, Digital Photo Pro, so I did that. It warned me that it was less intuitive than Elements, but I don't think that is actually possible, so that warning must be an AI glitch.

Canon's program is the least-unpleasant of the choices I have right now. I edited the photo and saved it as a JPG without too much trouble.

I think the best path is to choose the photos I like, edit them with Digital Photo Pro, and delete the rest. I can keep editing photos taken with other cameras in Affinity. Maybe.

It's frustrating, having to join a new religion every time you dare buy a camera that doesn't come from your favorite brand. AI claims Canon deliberately made this difficult. I hope that is not true.

I have been researching this, and I see glowing claims RE Photolab9. It already has the Powershot V1 built in, and it's supposed to be a good program. I was stupid to buy Elements instead of Lightroom, but I did the best I could with the information I was able to accumulate at the time. I didn't understand how awful Elements was for raw. I have the trial version of Photolab now.

Here is an update.

Embarrassingly, I have to confess: I didn't realize Canon's program was quietly snipping the dark corners out of images. I don't know why I didn't see it. Anyway, it is not correcting vignetting. It is just removing the corners.

Photolab has turned out to be wonderful. It's not hard to use. It opens CR3's from my Powershot. It takes Canon photos I thought were not worth editing and turns them into surprising keepers. The changes it makes even affect composition, by emphasizing and deemphasizing things. I didn't know that was possible.

To be completely objective, DPP4 seems to be what I would call a steaming heap of radioactive garbage. That is my unbiased take. Photos I edited with it look awful. I suppose that in reality, it's me, not the program, but I don't want to spend the next month figuring DPP4 out.

Photoshop Elements will not even open these files, even with Adobe's raw plugin installed. I converted some to DNG, and it works fine, but I think it's a waste of time, because Photolab will open CR3's, and I hate Elements.

There must be many people out there doing fine work with DPP4, but I don't see any reason to struggle with it if I can produce pictures I like much better with Photolab.
