How to program my flash???

What do I need to know to program a flash? What do all those numbers mean? I have a Nikon F65 with a NIKON SB-22S but may get Nikon SB-50 DX SPEEDLIGHT. What I mostly want to do with it for to take pictres indoors or outside in the shade.
Any help would be appreciated
