Tips on the sky?

I'm assuming this in North Dakota?

the whole shot is a couple of stops underexposed... snow will do that to you! Your camera sees all that white, and wants to turn it Grey.... trying adding a stop or two of light next time.

It is under exposed, but also unprofiled, so we have no idea what it "should" look like. Some curves to boost midtones and an increase to saturation on the sign should make this image useable.

north east montana, right beside ND, but i do venture to ND every day. and i'll do that, i need to get in the habit of taking multiple f stops, because im discovering this cameras display can be a bit deceptive in the field.

I travel to Williston a lot. Your name and the H2S sign give it away.

Just remember WHITE background +1 or 2 stops BLACK background -1 or 2 stops.

That will get you in the ballpark...

If you have a large subject... that can affect the exposure compensation needed. Also try Spot metering... more accurate than Matrix once you learn to use it.

williston..........what brings you to the bakken?

We have an office up there. From time to time I visit. I'm in the oil and natural gas industry. It's like a modern day gold rush up there but you probably know that :)

Indeed, i work for a company that does electrical automation and heavy equip repair. im the OSHA compliance guy. next time your in town, theres this legit place next to sloulin, its called big willys. good burgers, and an unusually clean atmosphere, be warned, long williston lines. i almost feel like im back in civilization when i eat there. lol

starting to see effects here in billings, even. New construction development up 80% from last year, highest since something like 2003.

Stockman Bank opened a large downtown office, and is building another large branch on Grand.

They all are - as far as I can tell they are designed to be viewed in very subdued light, either indoor light or a very overcast day. If it's any brighter than that, you need to look at the histogram to judge exposure - this is really a good idea in any light, but especially where it's bright.

Or know how to use the meter such to trust it.

Certainly not an ideal situation, but can be fixed with some curves and saturation adjustment:
