so what changed your mind? The shots I did for you should give you some idea of what the raynox is capable of... shots like this:

a true macro lens will give better quality.. but they are more expensive..

Well that was shot on a macro lens, correct?
I just wanted to be able to get true 1:1

That was shot on a 1:1 Macro lens with a Raynox DCR 250 attached.... if you want true 1:1, then a real Macro lens prime (not a zoom that says Macro) will be needed. Let us know what you decide... and if I see any good deals out there, I will let you know.

I bought the extension tubes finally! Yayyy, you guys don't have to put up with my questions anymore!
Sorry Gipson, I just think these will work better with my 18-55 than the Raynox would Also, I'm looking to get a macro lens in the future and these tubes will be awesome with it.

Which extension tubes did u get? Any links to where u bought them and why did u pick these particular tubes? Sorry for all the queries but I'm thinking about going the same route

I bought the kenko tubes from Amazon for $190.

These are for Nikon but they have them for Canon as well.

Decided myself to take the plunge into the world of macro photography, as it's a logical extension to my main passion of floral photography. I opted on the conservative side to go with a set of Nikon extension tubes: 8mm, & 12mm, and holding off on the 27.5mm tube for the time being. My lens of choice to be coupled with these tubes is the Nikon 18-70mm,used mostly at or near the 70mm focal length. Still not sure what I'm going to go with for lighting, but right now a ring light system seems the most logical choice for the floral close-ups I'll be concentrating on.

Theoretically any lens would work with tubes, as long as you can mount them.
It'll decrease the minimum focusing distance which will give you more magnification.
You'll also lose some light using them.

Yeah, i guess i just wondering if anyone has used the 85mm with tubes and how the results where. I dont want to use my 24-70 cause its heavy and already huge

I don't think Raynox is considered a filter. It is made of high index optical glass elements and termed a lens.
For 75 bucks or less it packs a mean punch. I feel it's worth every penny I paid for it.

Nikon has a new 40mm macro out now. Good price too. You could actually afford it and it is a true macro lens.

My next lens purchase is also going to be a macro lens as well. I went middle of the road due to financial considerations (appeasing the wife is one of those considerations). I've decided on a Tamron SP AF 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro Lens. Cost is $449 plus tax and shipping from Adorama. There is a $50 manufacturer rebate as well. This lens has gotten excellent reviews.

I get the point your making, but the performance of the Tamron 90 2.8 is anything but 'middle of the road!' Build quality is middle of the road, the performance is as good as it bloody gets!
