Last June, I found out for the first time that I have a younger brother, Derek. I won’t go too much into why I didn’t know about him, but he had known about our sister and me. He assumed we knew about him too but just didn’t care because we never reached out, so he never did either. If I had known, I absolutely would have. I wish I could have had him in my life much sooner. Derek is my half-brother on my dad’s side, but for whatever reason we were never told about him. My mom finally decided last summer that she couldn’t keep it a secret anymore. She and my dad have been divorced for 36 years, and until then, she felt it was his responsibility to tell us. I have a lot of mixed feelings about my parents' choices in all of this, but I've decided to let that go and focus on what matters most: that Derek and I are in each other’s lives now. It turned out he lives within walking distance of me, and we’ve since become like best friends. Finding out about him and getting close has been one of the best things to ever happen to me. While I wish we’d had a childhood together, I’m just grateful to have him in my life now.
I’ve taken his photos several times since meeting him. He was a little uncomfortable at first but I think he quickly started to enjoy it. He wears pretty much the same outfit in each photo, but I think that may just be his designated weekend outfit.
