Iguanas Ain't All Beautiful

Here in Florida we have a variety of Iguana types. This is one of the less than beautiful ones. There is a smaller one that is all green and is quite nice looking. Further south into Miami Dade at a golf course, I saw one that was 5 feet long. They go into my Star Fruit tree to eat the flowers then pee and poop into my pool It is legal to shoot them, but I normally just take a hose to scare them away. If it gets down to about 45 degrees, their metabolism slows down and they will fall out of the trees. As far as I know they are all herbivores.

So far these critters have stayed south of us, however we are starting to have reports of gators showing up here and there, and there's a pair of Black Panthers took up residence in our valley. I'm surprised they eat plant material, we have an abundance of Anoles and Horned Lizards which are insectivores. They're harmless and help keep the insects down around the deck.

Nice shots! Growing up on the Space Coast we never had problems with them, probably because they didn't go onto the barrier islands. They are fascinating photo subjects.

Ah, but to another iguana . . . Charles Darwin, in his record of his explorations on the Beagle, had me laughing out loud when he described a male lizard so ugly he couldn't imagine a female lizard finding him attractive!
