What's new

I'm not sure if I like the tight crop on these photos I took.

Photos NOT OK to edit
So I saw some birds at my bird feeder today, and couldn't resist taking some pictures. I've put them in an Imgur album so you can compare them really easily. The first shot has some crop because I wsa shooting with an 85mm lens, and the second shot will have a tighter crop.

chromatic aberration and noise are killing the crops more than the crops themselves are.

You are on the right track. I have been shooting birds for many years and I think you will find that as you shoot them, you will find something to improve on each time and you will slowly get better and better. When it comes to wildlife, birds particularly, eye sharpness is paramount. You just don't have it here. Cropping this much will kill your sharpness so the first thing I would do is shoot with a long lens, at least 400 mm so that you don't have to crop much, if at all. I would also position yourself so you have a soft or dark BG. The hot spots kill the photo IMO. Another rule I follow is I never shoot a bird on a feeder. I set up some natural perches near the feeder for them to land on before they feed. It works really good.
