I'm upgrading cameras! I need a whole bunch of 2 cent pennies!

So I'm thinking,

Canon 5D Mark II or Sony A900.

Any other suggestions in the $2k-$2.5k range?

I want to shoot eeeeverything! D:< hahaha.

I take it this will be your first DSLR? You have no lenses presently that would fit one or the other?

etphotos I've been stalking the 5d MK II. A phenomenal camera. Recent significant price drops from major dealers like Amazon, Adorama, and B&H could indicate that the 5dMKIII is on the horizon. The announcement could coincide with the Olympics around the corner, and/or once the 1dx starts shipping.

The 5d MK II is past due for an update, just keep that in mind before you drop a couple grand. The Mark III will probably release around 2.5-3k body only.

Even though the MK II is amazing, I'm probably going to hold out for the MK III. Not 100% sure yet, we'll see.

I currently have a sony a350 with a couple lenses that came in the "bundle" pack. Not sure if they'd fit the a900 or if I'd even want to use them lol I've never used Canon but I hear good things..

Hmm.. you make a good point. I forgot about my friend telling me the MKIII was well on its way, and it would kind of suck for my poor, broke, college self to drop a couple grand on an camera that just recently was surpassed/upgraded. Ever played with the a900?

There are three schools of thought, and many long, boring topic threads to back each side up.

#1 - Buy a mediocre body and the best lenses you can afford. The camera, after all, is just a box on the back of the lens where the important optics are housed. Improve the body when you can afford to.

#2 - Buy a very good body and mediocre lenses to start and then improve the lenses as you can afford to. The lens, after all, is just a tube of glass on front of the camera which houses the important sensor assembly.

#3 - Buy the best of everything, spend a few months getting frustrated by not knowing how to make it all work, sell it at a horrendous loss in less than a year.

You seem to be jumping into the fire here.
It really depends on what your goals are down the road what I'd buy. Seeing how you have lenses you don't want to carry over with you I'd really look to going Canon or Nikon, but Sony is not bad by any means. It's just easier to find accessories and stuff for Nikon and Canon. Especially used off craigslist... Sony's new accessories and lenses are readily available and on par with the rest... Sony is what you know... if you switch it will not only be a huge learning curve from the upgrade in camera and lenses, but also in the switch in brands. Everything feels different, works different and has different features. The only thing that is the same is shutter, ISO and aperture. The placement of them is even different.

Read the specs and info on each camera. Decide what you want, need, HAVE TO HAVE and can live without. That will narrow it down some. Then, once you've narrowed it down go to a store where you can play with at least one of each brand. Your new camera should stand out to you.
