improve photomatix results? tips?

common side effects i run into are image noise and posterization. It is relatively minor, posterization only noticeable in the sky if ever and the increase in noise isnt usually too bad, but it does seem to always happen.
Any tips/tricks to avoid this?
Is there anything worth doing to the raw files before importing them into photomatix?
