Increase Highlights In Star Trails

I have tried star trails in StarStax a few times now and find that increasing the highlights in the final output file in another program improves the appearance, somewhat. Would it make more sense to do this with individual images, before processing them in StarStax? I am certainly willing to do so, but with 300 shots, I thought I would ask about the experience of others, first.
