You can't ignore the red eye. It's evidence that the flash angle wasn't right. It's actually a very good indicator that you still need to adjust your lights. In this case, the lighting looks like you used on camera flash.

Other than that, I would say it's a bit oversharpened for my tastes considering the subject. And then, it doesn't really help that they were both obviously looking at something other than you. Aside from that, I would say the foot on the youngest one either needs to be attached to something or not be there at all.

I realize I didn't offer much constructive in my last response. To improve on this shot, I would bring the flash in closer, place it a bit higher, and dial down the power. Based on the direction they are looking, I would also have put it at camera right.

The post processing is something that is up to individual taste, but I probably would have brought the red's down a bit and not sharpened it nearly as much. Instead, of sharpening or adding contrast, I would have brought the blacks up a bit and probably moved the recovery slider up just a bit. I also would have dropped the saturation a little, also.

From there, just a quick smart sharpen at a reasonable level. As far as a crop, honestly, this composition wouldn't be my preference, but with this photo, I would probably go in much tighter, lose the entire left side up to almost his ear, and crop it just above the youngest one's foot. I also would crop out the right part of it and bring it in close to his shoulder or even a bit further.
