Interesting: An AI test in Post Processing

I recently encountered a comment identifying Google's AI Gemini as the current best at image post processing. Had some spare time and decided to run a quick test. I selected a difficult image that was side to backlit with the entire foreground in the shadows. I exposed to place the brightest highlight at the sensor saturation threshold and knew it would be a post processing challenge, but I knew it was possible and I wanted the photo.

First obstacle: Gemini can't process raw files. So I had to give it a minimally processed JPEG. I made sure the JPEG had full highlight retention and handed it off to Gemini -- image below your left. Here's the exchange with Gemini:

ME: "Post process the uploaded image, adjust white balance, tone response, exposure, and contrast."
Gemini gave me the photo you see below 2nd on your left. As I examined it I noticed that Gemini replaced content in the foreground removing some plants and putting in fake content!
ME: "You changed the image content in the foreground replacing original plants with different plants -- why?"
GEMINI: "The plants in the foreground were not replaced; rather, they were revealed.
In the original "tower-grove.jpg" image, the foreground is heavily underexposed, leaving the plants and the path hidden in deep shadows. By adjusting the exposure, tone response, and specifically lifting the shadows, the details, colors, and textures of the existing plants became visible. It looks like a different scene because you can now see the structure of the foliage that was previously obscured by darkness."
Total BS, Gemini added faked content.
ME: "Nope, you replaced what was there with faked material. Can you lighten the foreground and leave the original content in place."
Last image on your right is Gemini's response.
ME: "You've actually darkened the foreground compared to your earlier image and you're still putting in fake content."

Gemini's final attempt is in the second illustration below side by side with my processed image. Gemini is still replacing the original content with faked material even though I requested it not do that. I think a visit to the eye doctor is in order. That was amusing and a little scary.

Gemini's is more natural. You brightened the shadowed foreground too much. It would never be that bright in real life, making it look photoshopped. The picture is obviously back or side lighted. A diffficult shot to deal with for human or machine.

I wasn't expecting Gemini to match my processing result -- that possibility was taken off the table from the start when I learned Gemini couldn't work with raw data. As such there's no option for a real test. I went ahead and passed it the JPEG just for grins and I wouldn't have posted this except that:
1. Gemini chose to replace content in the photo with faked content even though no such prompt was given.
2. It then claimed it had not replaced content when in fact it had! Does it not know what it did?!! How's that possible?
3. If it knows what it did then did it choose to lie?
4. Even after it was instructed to not replace content it continued to do so! What's that about?

I got that. It's processed the way I intended from before I clicked the shutter. I like the way I processed it and wouldn't entertain changing it. I didn't expect Gemini to match it and again wouldn't have bothered to post this except for Gemini's bizarre behavior altering the image content.

Now let me explain the photo so you'll understand the processing. 1.5 blocks from my house and the street I live on dead ends into the front entrance to Tower Grove Park. About 100 years ago a small stream that ran through the east end of the park was buried -- pipes in the ground and covered it over. About 5 years ago the Parks dept. decided to restore the stream and create a little wetland area for it to flow through. Half way through the wetland there's a foot bridge and my back is up against it. Before the restoration job I would have been standing on mowed lawn with nothing to see except more mowed lawn. I took the photo primarily to show the restoration job and that little wetland they created to my wife -- beyond that I tried to take an interesting photo and I enjoy a lighting challenge.

Quite a few -- that's why I posted the side by side images. Look right along the bottom edge left of center in my version there's a clump of grass; in Gemini's version that grass is transformed into a leafy plant.

Since it can't process raw files, perhaps you would get better results by processing the raw file to have much more detail for it to work with, before handing it off to Gemini. To be honest the file you gave to it doesn't seem to have much detail to work with in the shadows, and jpeg files aren't going to allow it to pull a lot out of that, so I'm not surprised that it struggled.

By the way, I quite like your processing. I think the file you handed off to Gemini should have been processed to have closer to that level of detail, rather than giving it a very dark jpeg. Just out of curiosity, did you process yours using the raw file, or did you process it using the same file that you gave to Gemini?
