Is a nikon 50mm F1.8 a good start?

My first 3 lenses were a 50 f/1.4, 55 f/3.5 micro, and a 45 f/2.8 GN. These were the only lenses I had until about 1974. Each had a purpose, but the focal lengths were close enough that I learned to see what the camera saw. I agree, zooms make us laze, both in expended energy and with our ability to see the shot. I still use the 50 a lot for full frame/film, and a 35 f/2 for cropped chip digital.
