Is DPreview.com always so unfriendly?

I stopped and registered. I asked a simple question on a forum. I got a few decent and a few rude responses and then I was banned before I could respond to anything in the thread. I've never seen this on an internet forum before. Very strange.

Wow? Seriously? You were banned for just asking a question? There was nothing else to it???

Well, I can tell you most forums are much more rude than this one.. this one being really exceptional ...

hmm. but get banned on a formu should be not too easy ... can you give more details? maybe I should register, ask the same question .. and see what happens ;)

Mabe you told them you shoot film also? that could cause you some trouble if they are hardcore ;) I just posted some film shots on a purelys digital forum .. waiting to see if anyone finds out (it even says so in the EXIF ;) )

EDIT: just had a look at dpreview forums again .. and I wonder why anyone would like to register there ... if you see their endless discussions about nothing ...

.. also their photokina shots where rather poor compared to those made by members of this forum ;)

I just asked if anybody had developed a digital camera with upgradeable sensors so that it wouldn't become obselete in the future. I asked because I didn't know. Seems like a reasonable reason to ask a question. I got a couple of answers that told me no and I got some rude responses that I assume meant the question was considered stupid. I was going to respond to one of the responses and the system said I was banned when I hit the post button. It didn't say why. This happened 1/2 hour after I logged in for the first time.

I don't have any problem avoiding the place. I was just curious to know if it had happened to others.

I agree that TPF is more polite than most internet forums. I would also say it put DP Review to shame.

Par for the course, fmw, unfortunately. Far too many administrators and moderators wallow in their 'power' and enjoy wielding the whip over their fiefdoms. They're are really just sad, but nasty little brownshirts forcing their often very personal, quirky mores on unsuspecting visitors.
And some just have a bad case of PMS . . .

Phil Askey is notorious!

Actually that is a very consumer-friendly idea ...
... acutally when you shoot MF and us digital backs it is similar to that ...

hm, or maybe the admin wanted to ban one of those impolite users ...
.. but probably he was just being plain stupid ...

will have a look on that forum maybe i can find your post and have a look

That's a shame. I've only ever browsed their forums...and they don't feel very nice...to see this...is just stupid. I'm sure it's not you personally...they probably get so many idiots trying to stir the pot...that when they get a question that they think may cause some sort of heated discussion...they shut it down and ban like crazy.

As for your question...
I just asked if anybody had developed a digital camera with upgradeable sensors so that it wouldn't become obselete in the future
Would current medium format digital cameras meet that definition for you? There are several 'digital backs' that will fit medium format cameras...cameras that have been designed to use film backs. This way, you can keep 'the camera' and upgrade 'the back'. It's not really the same as upgrading the sensor though....and at the price of a typical digital back...you could buy several Canon or Nikon top end DLSR cameras.

And if only those backs didn't cost as much as a late model used car.....

As you can see from my signature, I operate a forum as well. In fact I use the same software as TPF. I know what irritates a forum administrator. I didn't do anything that would irritate me on my forum.

ok, found your post .. and the op responded:
"Wanting to buy a top of the range camera and asks a question like that.Unreal. "

OMG! how f***ing stupid are those guys on that forum.

Of course it would but I'm not going to go there. I used to rent a scanning digital back for the view camera back in the late 90's from time to time when I needed it. Rental fees were hard enough to afford for those things let alone the purchase price.

I had mentioned in one forum that I would buy a Nikon D2X tomorrow if they had built some upgradeability into it. I paid about $3000 years ago for a Fuji S1 camera body that I sold for $400 when I replaced it about a year ago with the D50. That kind of obselescence doesn't make sense to an old shooter like me. But it seems to be the norm. At least I have my answer. Nobody makes an upgradeble DSLR.

It's interesing. I've been a photographer for 1/2 a century and owned a commercial photo business for 10 years. I've had images published on magazine covers. I've sold Thousands of stock photos. I've shot national magazine ad campaigns. I'm willing to bet I have more photographic experience than the op. But I don't know everything. Neither does he.

trying to get a login there... post a comment .... and probably get banned there too ;)

I myself did not pay much attention to digital cameras until just before i wanted to buy one. so I too was stupid about the digital business for a long time ... the only thing I knew before was that those images I saw would not satisfy so I stayed with film for a long time.

but that way of thinking is unknown to many people on such almost purely technical forums on digital imaging. I bet the admin never shot on film so he comes with a way of thinking that he does not understand that being a serious photograper does not require digital expertise.
