Is it safe to fly with equipment?

Digital or film both are safe to take on board, or go through security x-ray. I used to take 1600asa film on board with me and never had any issues with it, including lights through some of the most secure xray systems in the world.

Never pack gear for the cargo hold, you'd be surprised how things magically vanish at airports without a trace.

just got back from Russia, and have flown all over the world , never an issue.

Just be aware one must remove the laptop and place it in it's own "tray", and that is true everywhere, not just in the us.

I have used several types of rolling cases as I carry a lot of equipment, my favorite now is from Thinktank and it has 4 wheels so one can just push it along not drag.
