I am sure this could do with some drainage after the snow

Get the old beak vibrating nicely . .

. . . and go for it! That should let some air into the roots.

The green woodpecker has bee a regular visitor both with a snow covering and now that it has cleared - there must be a good supply of bugs fairly near the surface. It leaves a fair sized hole - just as if a screwdriver has been pushed in about 4-5inches and rotated - saves all that spiking.

We had one like those hacking into our lawn, too, before all the snow arrived, which is in the process of melting, but which is still there. There aren't any birds ON the snow, though, they'd sink in too deeply, I'm afraid.

From a week ago - we had very little snow - hard frosts so crusty and a sharp beak needed.

We have one of these in the garden as well, though I've not seen him recently. Surprising thing is how big they are when you get closer to them (sadly he only flashed at me as he flew past... no time for a shot at all).

Too cool...What kind of woodpecker is it? I've never seen my woodpeckers (Red-Bellied) searching on the ground. They always stay hanging on the tree. I throw seed on the ground for the Junco's and doves though.

When the feeder runs dry one of my woodpeckers will hang on the telephone pole (outside my office window) and raise cane until I feed him. :lmao:

This would be a green woodpecker (from the UK)

No wonder I didn't know what it was! I would love to travel the world and see every kind of bird. Sigh... too little time and way too little money!

This is the Greater Spotted Woodpecker raiding one of my feeders - the one that I see most often in the garden - not much bigger than a starling and a lot smaller that the Green Woodpecker or "yaffle" as the country folk call it.

Oh...He's pretty too and reminds me of the Downy Woodpeckers we have here! This is my Red-Bellied Woodpecker. He can get obnoxious when the food runs dry.

He looks beautiful - perhaps I could borrow him to brighten up some of our dull foggy cold days here

@Fangman: the fourth(new) is excellent in that snowy b/g.

@Wellman: how cute that bird is!!!

Regards :D

Thanks Frequency! And yes, he's a gem.

Fangman, there are two that hang here and you are welcome to take one off my hands. But be ready to buy tons of food!

Do you have Pileated Woodpeckers across the pond?

I had to dig but I found the Pileated Woodpecker photo. Sadly all I had at the time was a Canon point and shoot (with an attached telephoto lens). I sure wish he would come back and let me have another go!

The Pileated woodpeckers seldom come out of the woods (at least in my area) so I was tickled to see him. They get about the size of a crow.
