What's new

Is this normal?

Just so you know though the other side of the coin.

The average stock price for a web image that size with a standard License is $3.26 With an Unlimited Licence $130

So there's your competition's prices

Not saying stock prices these days are OK...But they are what they are and they are there

Where do I sell my images as stock images?

Adversus,

Thanks for your detailed response. Just to clarify.
I'm not making a phone app. I was contacted by someone who has a project going already. He made the app, the app is working and he has many photographers that he has licensed image use from. I would just be one of the photographers that would supply him with a few photos (currently he wants use 6 of my images). I have nothing to do with his app, or his website other than that he will be using a few of my photographs amongst the others.
Plus, if he sells any of my images in print form, we split the proceeds 50-50.
So, the contract is just for photography, nothing else.

Actually, if you display in a Gallery, You get 50%,(without even figuring your cost of the print +Framing so actual maybe 25%)
With galleries it varies, and ultimately boils down your negotiating skills. Galleries that want more than 40% don't get to represent my work.

You don't sell images.

You license images. Or a stock house licenses your images for you and keeps some amount of the licence fee for maintaining the stock web site, doing the advertising, collecting and disbursing the money, etc.

The stock photography business has undergone massive changes over the last 15 years. Those changes have greatly diminished the earning potential for photographers.

RF licensing literally pays pennies, while RM licensing can still pay dollars though a lot fewer dollars than RM paid 15 years ago.

RF= Royalty Free RM= Rights Managed.

I only have one other comment. Why is this in the beginner's section? It clearly belongs in the professional section!

Because the Beginners forum section is a catch-all?

I don't think the OP is a pro.

The OP, and a lot of other uninformed amateur photographers, got approached by someone writing an app that wants to take advantage of their business ignorance.

I don't have a huge axe to grind on the matter, but the discussion is clearly to me on the pro end, and is mostly contract discussion plus commission rates. This is pro discussion. My main issue is that if people believe that the OP is a beginner they might think it reasonable that they have a gallery or an app to sell their work. To me, this is a professional discussion regardless of whether the OP earns his daily wage from photography or not, and there is already too much non-beginner material in the beginner's section which is justified by saying it has the biggest footfall. It isn't a beginner's discussion as no beginner would be talking about selling their work through an app.

Fine.

Report the thread to the TPF mods. They are the only ones that can move it.

The thread is pertintent to non-pros that may get approached in a similar manner.

I'm not being arsey, honest. I just think that sometimes the beginners section gets bogged down and a lot of people wanting guidance get ignored. How many people click on to page 2 of beginner's? Not that many I bet. It's not a dig at you KMH, you help out plenty of people in this section and give well written explanations of things.

Can't argue there KmH.
I am on the cusp of going from amatuer to "semi-professional" meaning I have started a short while ago to sell my works and my services and have a number of satisfied customers under my belt who believe I'm a professional, but I know better, I still have a long way to go. So I thought this would be the perfect place to get some advice on something I have never tried before, and am still totally new at.

You may be right, maybe I should have posted this in another section on the forum. Then again, I don't think I've ever posted anywhere else on the forum because I still feel I'm an amateur.

One thing I think is that some people (definitely including myself) that have been doing photography for awhile, tend to still look at themselves as amateurs, whereas to people that are just starting out, we appear to be pros or almost pros, and we are taking the attention away from them.
Don't worry, one thing I have seen on this forum is that you will get all the attention you need. There are plenty of people here who will help, and by reading these "semi- amateur-professional" posts, you will learn a tremendous amount. This is how I've learned, and how many others on here have learned also, I'm sure.
I definitely wouldn't be anywhere as far as I am (not that I'm saying that I'm that far) without this forum.
A suggestion?
Maybe the mods could bump the posts to other sections if they feel it is not meant for the beginner section?

Great explanation. Thank you. Now, any ideas where to license them to?;)

** EDIT **: My bad, I mis-read your first post. I thought YOU were doing the iPhone app. I blame pain medication from surgery yesterday.

Your first post says..........................
No problem at all. Hope you feel better soon.
