Issue with 70-200 2.8 IS II

Hey folks, Shot a wedding at the weekend and my 70-200 2.8 IS II (on my 5D III) started playing up, I just shot a few test images today, hopefully you can make out the wierd blotchy, low contrast, purple fringed mess that is appearing on the left hand side of all the images?

The problem seems to be occuring from F8 upwards at the same spot on every shot (The images above were shot at F11 300/s at a low ISO). If anyone owns the lens you'll know that it handles Chromatic Aberration like a champ so any ideas as to what on earth is going on here would be greatly apreciated.

if you only notice it stopped down (f8 +) and it's in the same position every shot then it's something is on the sensor. easy to clean with eclipse solution and pec pads

Hi mate, thanks for replying, I know that's what it sounds like especially due to it only being apparent stopped down, the only head scratcher is that the sensor was cleaned by Canon at the end of Feb and looks clean as a whistle, and even stranger the problem’s not there with the 24-70 II! So it must be the lens :-(

OK, if you've compared the same scenes with different lens and you get that effect only with the 70-200 then unfortunately it looks like a repair trip for the lens

I would check both front and rear elements on the lenses, it looks like a finger print smear.

yes, carefully check the exterior of the glass but usually fingerprints don't have that effect
