Looks a bit underexposed to me. Probably at least 2/3rds of a stop. What was the shot data on this image?

I was trying not to blow out the white uniform, there are actually a couple of spots that were blown out as is. It was ISO 1600, 1/250 sec and f/5.6. It was a 200mm on a crop frame.

I did attempt pulling up the shadows, but it totally killed the atmosphere of the shot and turned it into a completely average snapshot. Maybe it still is a completely average snapshot, but i liked the feel of it this way. Not saying that's right, just that that is why I made it this way.

Also I sort of wanted his face deliberately obscured because it was fully in shadow and I was going for the idea of the star athlete sort of having a personal moment getting himself ready for the AB.

What's the color version look like? Its possible that it may just need to be in color to not have such a dramatic jump in the tonal range.

As it is, I don't think it really "works" as anything other than a snapshot, unless you can clone out the person on the right.

I deliberately left the umpire in the frame to give a bit more context. Again, not saying it was the right choice, but it was a deliberate choice.

IMO, the baseball bat and uniform is all the context I need. I don't see what the umpire says in the image that the other elements don't, you know?

I wanted to really get across that this is the moment right before he steps to the plate. Sort of a 'gathering yourself and locking into focus' type feel. Without the umpire I sort if felt it just seemed like he was standing there randomly. That was my thought at least.

There is not really enough Umpire showing to add context to someone that wasn't there. We just see a black blob that might be a shirt.. with a 4 on it. As Tyler said.. the gear, uniform, etc.. provide plenty of context, with no distractions! I too recommend cloning the "ump" out...
