I'm a poor college student and like some photographers on a tighter budget, I kinda wanted to share some of my "special" tools that I like to use!
1) Backgrounds on the cheap- I like to use cheap bolts of cloth that are on clearance at my local walmart...perfect for head shots and smaller things like animals and the like Cost per background? $5
2) Lighting equipment on the cheap- I don't have the money to spend on some fancy light kit so what do I do? I get the cheapest work lights from home depot...at 250watts, they're strong enough to light, but weak enough not to need dampening! These come with a short cord so I also bought extension cords! Cost per light with extension cords? $12
Workforce WORKFORCE PORTABLE HALOGEN WORKLIGHT - 265-669 at The Home Depot
3) Lighting tent for objects for sale- The best possible thing I've found here is just a simple piece of poster board from your local pharmacy or walmart does wonders. Let it curl up against the wall and you've got an instant perfect white background (assuming you've got the lights as well) Cost of poster board? ($1-$4)
4) Instant macro lens 1- Take a telephoto lens (it might work with others...but I've only tried it this way) and at the end, take a smaller lens (i used a prime 50mm) and set the aperture wide open. Turn the lens around and tape it to the telephoto. Instant macro! Make sure everything is in manual focus and you should be set! Cost of instant macro lens 1? Cost of tape!
5) Instant macro lens 2- Get a macro adapter ring. This screws into the filter spot of your lens and allows it to be attached to your camera backwards. Instant macro lens (obviously needs manual focus but is very nice). Cost of instant macro lens 2? $5-$50 depending on where you buy!
If you have any other techniques that are simple for the photographer on a budget post them here!
