As the weather turns colder it is very important to remember to not leave cameras, lenses, flashes, tripods and laptops out in cold cars. The cold weather can have very bad effects on internal mechanical components.

If you do leave your gear in cold temps, make sure warm it up slowly or condensation will appear and cause damage.

That is all...

Not the camera but have been stuck with dead batteries. At my work we have lost many a laptop due to people leaving them in a car over the weekend when temps are below zero.

Thanks for the reminder, I forgot to bring my gear in after my excursion this morning, so it's all cold as a mofo right now!

Thank you. Didn't it affected computers.

Yup, if you take a very cold hard drive (not solid state) and turn it right on the components that spin at several thousand RPMs can cause damage.

Not to mention whenever I hear about cars being broken into its always someone leaving there laptop or camera or purse lying on the seat.

So--how cold *is* "too cold" for a camera and lenses?
I generally bring my camera bag with me to work--but unless I KNOW I'll need it that day, I leave it locked in the trunk. I park on an outside level of the parking garage (so the car IS out in the cold, not sheltered--unless it snows or rains, then I do park in the more sheltered area.

The camera and lenses are inside a LowePro camera bag, which is inside the trunk. Right now, it's not really an issue, as it's still getting into the 60s in the daytime, or the 50s on a really "cold" day. But in January and February, we'll have days that will top out in the low 40s. Is even that going to be cold enough to affect the camera, given the fact that it's kinda "insulated" from the cold inside the camera bag?

Anything below freezing is risky and below zero is crazy.

Where I live it's below freezing fro Dec - Mar and below zero jan-feb.

Great question sm4him. I have been bringing mine to work in my bag and leaving it in my vehicle all day. Granted, it hasn't gotten below freezing here yet, but it's a good reminder as it does get colder this winter.

I always tell my boss about this time of year that if it the weather turns cold and I don't show up or call for two or three days, she'll know...I've headed off to live in the Caribbean and make a living selling photos to tourists. :lmao:
