Dropping clarity significantly into the negative range on subjects and scenes that have a lot of darker tones looks dreaful to me...just totally cheezy. Why? Diffused shadows look utterly unnatural and fake, which for me, renders negative clarity to the point of diffusion something akin to selective color; a technique that just does not work a huge percentage of the time. Diffused highlights make sense...diffusion on blacks makes no sense, visually, or culturally...

A tiny,tiny bit of lowered clarity, okay, I can handle that. But when the darks start haloing...the effect is just so blatant that it crosses over the line of artistic expression and into cheese.
