But it's 10:36PM right now, so it's too late to go out and play with it! I just did some in-home shots that I won't post.

First impressions:
1) The weight is nice. I like it.
2) It's somewhat large, but not ridiculously large unless if I put the hood on. Inconspicuous enough...
3) The bokeh is very nice, much better than the DX 35mm Nikkor lens.
4) The focus is *SILENT*!!! It's just a slight bit slower on focus than I'd have hoped, but it's still snappy enough. If the focus were just slightly faster, I would be impressed. I'm not dissatisfied, just not wowed at all. I'd prefer a slightly louder focus that is a bit faster, it's damn silent as it is right now.
5) The focus doesn't hunt in low light, but I haven't had enough time to test it. I did have inconsistent focus at 18mm in low light on a small test, but I'll see whether that's focus hunting (it didn't hunt, it clicked in) or requiring some calibration.
6) Sharp!
7) Feels amazing in the hand.
8) The dock (bought separately) feels cheap, and feels like it's going to break the lens when I put it on / take it off the lens. The dock feels super cheap and is super light and doesn't even feel like nice plastic. The software is fine, it offers lens calibration. That's all I bought it for, just in case. Not too exciting.
9) My D5200 almost looks a little silly. But the lens is at home on the D5200 regardless. D7100? It would look really nice. I feel sold on the DX format with this lens... would be interesting to see a 50-135 f1.8 counterpart.
10) Parfocal! Actually really cool. Didn't think that would be a neat feature but I immediately like that.
11) It's just about a macro lens. Does very very close focusing.
12) Pictures look sharp on all my lenses, the 10-20 f4-5.6, 50 1.8g, 85 1.8g, etc. However, video can be another thing entirely for whatever reason. The 18-35 Sigma Art breathes new life into video on this camera... wow. I did a test video and it looks so good. Parfocal zooming with this is so much fun.
13) A lot of people are worried that this lens has too short of a focal range, and that a 17-50 f2.8 is better for that extra 15mm reach. I did do a sharpness test, and it performs well. So, if I wanted an image that looks like what a 50mm f2.8 on DX looks like, I would just shoot at 35mm f1.8 and crop in. I end up with approximately the depth of field, give or take. Arguably, I may end up with a sharper/better image than an f2.8 zoom at 50mm as well. Just food for thought there.
14) One year warranty? That instills confidence! (Sarcasm). I think if I bought locally I would get a 7 year warranty (Canada-only), but that's offered through an affiliated company and not worth it. I read the warranty on my Sigma 10-20 f4-5.6. The fine-print reads that I must pay for shipping *both ways*, and the warranty can be revoked universally for any reason at any point prior to the 7 years being up.
15) I might need a new (larger) camera bag now that this is my walk-around lens.

I'll do an actual review once I've gotten to play with the thing some more. I'll be checking how much (if at all) I need to calibrate the lens first thing when I have time, since I did end up with troubles focusing at 18mm on high contrast targets. It definitely is nice so far.

Lucky you. How much did you paid for it?

$799 + s&h. Plus $59 for the dock.

After tax conversion, $1006 charged against my Visa all in for everything.

Congrats on the new lens.
Let the fun times begin

Thanks. Played with it a little more, I had zero subjects to shoot though. Just... zooming in and out, playing with the rings on the lens.

Another pro I noticed: I can stare at the lens and cradle it for a good 10 minutes without getting bored.

A con I noticed: Dust, skin particles, etc... those get on the zoom and focus rings *really* easily. The design on the rings is good for grip, but just feels like the lens is messy. Probably would've been better as just a grippy flat rubber instead to be honest.

Can't wait to see some photos. Even better if you have a chance to compare it with the Nikon 18-35mm G lens.

Definitely going to post some shots, just might be a few days from now.

The 18-35mm f3.5-4.5G lens isn't in the same category as the Sigma 18-35 f1.8. The Nikon 18-35 is an ultrawide to wide designed for full frame & next to utterly useless on DX; it's a somewhat affordable alternative to the 16-35mm VR f4 (I would be getting the 16-35 VR on full frame if I had to choose, if I were buying new at full price). The Sigma 18-35mm is a DX-only lens and it's a wide-to-normal, constant f1.8 aperture. Essentially you're comparing a 27-53mm (Sigma) field of view to an 18-35mm field of view on full frame, and constant aperture versus variable. Very different.

I really have no lenses worth comparing the Sigma 18-35 f1.8 Art to. I do think I'll do a fairly intense review. I obviously won't report on any specific numbers like a scientific sharpness rating (not only do I not know how to do that, but all those resources already exist for the lens). Rather, I'll just provide my feedback, and touch on a few points I feel are important & haven't been talked about in any of the reviews I've read (and I've read them all, even the amazon and b&h customer reviews... hundreds!).

definitely waiting for shots from this...

I have the older 18-35mm f/3.5-4.5 AF-D lens for use on my FF. I love it. compact, inexpensive and fun to shoot with.
All the car shows on my Flickr account are with that lens.

Oic. I didn't know they produce Art lenses for APS-C sensors ... my bad.

They could make it easier, such as calling the APS-C lenses ART-Cy
and maybe a prefix for the FX lenses .. like F-ART
just joking :)

he'll be taking photos all day long now .... starting with the sunrise ... or maybe a wide angle longer exposure of the sky and stars

Now all you need is a d7100/d7200. Try and sell that d5200 when you can, with every new generation it will be severely devalued. Right now, nobody even gives a second look to the d3100, unless they are cash strapped.

Unfortunately, stores are still selling d3100 kits !! --> Nikon D3100 14.2MP Digital SLR Camera with 18-55... : Target

I wonder if this is new manufactured inventory, or shelved - unsold inventory.

NOS. New Old Stock sales are HUGE for Nikon. A while back, a three-generations back, discounted 3xxx series was Nikon's top selling camera, according to an article I read, I think from Thom Hogan, who is a real Nikon expert and Nikon-watcher. the PRICES are just soooo low, that it makes those older bodies paired with a low-cost kit zoom seem like such an attractive proposition to the casual consumer, or to young people who just want "a good camera, better than a point and shoot, and better than my phone." These are also attractive as GIFT purchased, for dad and grads and wedding presents and so on.

Back to the 18-35 f/1.8--congratulations, Paul!!! High-end zoom specs! There really is NO other zoom like that one on the market. The sheer speed! F/One-point-eight!!! In a zoom! From 18 to 35mm...unprecedented!
