Nikon D200 shutter wont fire

It should be a flat fee to replace the shutter; might be worth checking into.

If I select 'Mirror Up', it flips up as normal, and returns when I switch off, so my guess would be a faulty shutter button.
Last ditch. You might consider working some isopropyl(99%)under the button, working it and letting it dry. Battery out, of course.

Try firing the shutter with a remote or using the USB cable to a computer.

I dont have remote, and not sure the D200 can hook up a cable and fire from a computer, but I'll certainly take a look into it. Remotes are around $15, whereas a remote on AliExpress shipped free from China to UK, is $2. Makes one wonder how they make any money.

Three tips:
o Set self timer to 30 seconds. If shutter button works it will display a blinking LED or indicator when pressed.
o Extend the zoom on the kit lens or it won't function (youtube video "Nikon tips - how to adjust shutter aperture and ISO")

Other tips from google:
Focus confirmation:
The D200 usually won't fire the shutter unless it has achieved focus, so make sure the green focus confirmation dot is visible in the viewfinder.
  • Shooting mode:
Double-check your shooting mode isn't set to a setting that requires manual intervention like "M" (manual) or "Mup" (mirror lock-up).

  • Lens connection:
Ensure the lens is properly mounted and the lens aperture ring is set to the correct position.

  • Manual focus:
Try switching to manual focus to see if the shutter fires, which can help identify if the autofocus is the issue.

Recall an old trick of letting the camera sit "off" for 12hrs or so before trying again. Urban legend?
OMG, CGW you are a LEGEND. I did exactly what you said, changed nothing, turned it on this evening, pressed the shutter button, and to my utter amazement, it fired, and now shoots as if there's nothing wrong with it. Unbelievable. Even better, I checked the shutter count, and it's 1246. Merry Christmas :-)

Sublime. Shoot it till it breaks, amigo. Happy Christmas!
BTW, don't be a drive-by poster. Visit again with pix and gab, OK?
