that had been in a box that got wet and came across some slides of a mission I was on in Ethiopia in 1989.
An American Congressman had been killed in a plane crash along with 8 staff and 9 Ethiopian crew and staff.
I was with the Armed Forced Medical Examiner's team who ran the recovery and identification.
We flew in on a C-5 Galaxy with all our supplies, refrigerated trailers and equipment.
Most of the slides are not appropriate for public viewing but here are three that might be interesting.
(bad slides, worse scan but viewable)
The crash site was on the side of a very steep hill some distance from Addis Ababa and everyone had to be roped in to keep from sliding down the hill.
The plane had disintegrated and the bodies strewn around; lots of remains had been mangled and mixed by animals, insects and the elements in the 10 days until the plane was located
This was when Ethiopia was a dictatorship ruled by Colonel Mengistu and people in US uniforms hadn't been seen in many years and were a novelty to most of the people we met.
