If it wasn't for the title I would have never noticed what I imagine are the shoes...

I couldn't disagree more.
Shots of single branches, focusing on a few shoes, would lose quite a lot. Then it could be any tree, anywhere, in any contect.
I think it's important to capture the context of this tree. Out, seemingly, in the middle of nowhere.

I think this would be viewed better large, rather than on a computer screen.

I do, however, think that lighting is key in making this image rise up.
