Kingfisher BIF's (7 images)

i really like the wing detail in 3 and 7! Nice work Danny! BIF shots baffle me to begin with and knowing you're using MF kills me. You're giving me the itch to try more BIF shots. Hopefully my AF can keep up with you ;).

Hey thanks a lot folks. Its a passion, no doubt about it.

Nate, I shoot with mainly Canon shooters and they use everything from a 1DX to several using 5D MK III's. All with 400 F/2.8, 500 F/4 or the 600 F/4 and I'll tell you something ;) You would be surprised who I've talked into switching AF off :)

If a KF is coming into a perch, there is no way AF is fast enough to get the shot. So now Steve and Boney along with Chris, do exactly what I do, they pre-focus on the perch, sit and wait. That way you catching them coming in or taking off, ahhh where is one ......

So you get the idea Nate, pre-focus on the perch and wait, its a patience game, same as setting out a feeder but on a natural wild life larger version :) Pre-focus.

Of course when it comes to BIF's in the sky, you are on your own mate, LOL. I use a technique where I fire off a slow burst (not fast) while MF at the same time, forward and backward. Out of 5 shots I expect 3 to be in focus. Even the AF folks miss and I get to hear all the swear words that go with it.

All the best folks and thanks again.

Danny.

Thanks for the tips Danny! I shoot a nikon d7100 with a 70-300mm. I don't have the funds for some of those large prime lenses but I just pre-ordered the Tamron 150-600mm. I'm hoping it's as sharp as my 70-300mm. I'm hoping the extra reach will help me from scaring things away! I'll definitely try turning my AF off! I cant wait for the flycatchers to start coming back. They have perched well for me.

That Tamron is darn good Nate. Just look at what Jaca is getting with it, sharp and showing fine details. If I was going AF at the moment and considering cost, I would grab one as well. That is some lens and a bargain IMO. He is also a great shooter, so its in the right hands. Good on you Nate and you will love that lens and the reach.

This is really exciting to hear. I just wish I could have had it through migration season! Jaca's shots are pretty incredible!
