Can others edit my Photos
Photos OK to edit
Hey Guys,

For those of you that responded to my earlier thread about landscape shot, I took all your advice into consideration and came up with the following. I learned quite a bit about clipping masks in elements. I figured out how it works. Whether or not I applied my edits correctly is another story!

Everyone else, please feel free to comment!

Version 1 is the original. Version 2 is the corrected version.

It's decent.

I don't care for the rocks in the foreground though.
They seem to command more attention than needed.

Thanks! There's just something about it I still don't like! This is tough!

Maybe it's the rocks?

Could be the centered horizon line?

Generally, you include an object in the same plane of another to indicate scale.
The foreground rocks don't relate to the "mountain" a mile away, for that purpose.

That's true. An example would be a person standing on a sand dune. you can see how big or small the dune is in relation to the person.

Thanks for that.

Can I post an edit of this photo, Dan?

I like the foreground element and wouldn't crop it out. I almost wish there was more foreground in the picture... maybe a vertical shot? Did you take any vertical shots?

Go for it!

I didn't take a vertical shot.

First I made a duplicate layer and adjusted the levels so the rocks were a bit darker. I erased the background from that layer. I then went into adjustments > hue/saturation and brought up the lightness of the red channel. I decided I wanted some contrast in the sky so I made another duplicate layer, increased contrast and erased everything except the sky from that.

The layers and erasing are a lazy way to mask but I was working with a small file to give an example. Another way to do all that without masking is by using a plugin called 'Viveza 2' - a nice photoshop plugin that lets you edit parts of your photos with smart control points, usually allowing you to get away without making masks.

I really like that edit Paul. One thing that is clear is that my photo was oversaturated. I used the same technique as far as using duplicate layers, adjusting and erasing and then doing it all over again for subsequent adjustments.

I need to continue to learn more about pp. Thanks for the tips.
