Large format film scans and Lightroom 2.0.. problems!

I have a problem: lightroom 2.0 can't seem to handle the size of 4x5 negative scanned at 3200dpi (about 14,000 x 11,000 pixels).

When I zoom to 1:1 it will take 5+ minutes to come up; that's if it doesn't hang, which it does 90% of the time.

I have 2 gigs of ram, which should be more then enough---Photoshop cs3 handles these large files with ease.

Has anybody else used lightroom with images of this high of resolution? What has your experience been like? I don't want to reduce my scanning resolution, as there's an obvious loss of detail between 2400 and 3200 dpi.

That's a 900 MB file at 16 bits, which is what Lightroom works in by default.

Just out of interest, what are you scanning with and what output size do you require? That could help us suggest an alternative method of getting what you want with a smaller file size.

I'm using an epson V700, output size is ???... My goal was to create a digital archive of my negatives, so I don't need to dig them up and clean/scan them them again in the future.

Now that I think about it, that's a ridiculous assumption--scanners are improving yearly and I'm sure I'll be going back to the negatives in the future anyway. I think I'll reduce my scan resolution to something more manageable.

The V-700 appears to have a true resolution of about 2000 ppi, so I suggest scanning at 4800 ppi and then resampling to 2400 ppi (The highest true resolution may only be acheivable by scanning at a higher resolution.). Then save, and work on, the 2400 ppi file.
