I find the second much more appealing, especially with the coloration as shown.
The aspect ratio is a bit odd, it doesn't seem to match any I am used to seeing and I don't think it is as appealing as a 16:9 might be - and even a narm warm sepia tone to match the look of the buildings.

Thanks for the comment Lew, and I like your version of the harbour scene. I also like the warm tones, giving a little more dominance to the pier, in the original version.
To me it gives more depth than the sepia tones version.

I am a bit anal about aspect sizes for my images, and I virtually always use 4:3, 3:4 or 1:1.
Just me, I find 4:3 a pleasing ratio (probably watched too much TV as a kid, I need to upgrade to widescreen...), but hey, we are all different - thank goodness!

How foolish of me not to recognize the 4:3.

I don't think it's anal to prefer a specific aspect ratio. I always crop to 4:5, 2:3 or very, very occasionally 1:1 or 16:9.
Not only do I prefer 4:5 for portraits (because it fits the human form better) bu t I think that viewers in general are socialized to accept and 'see through' standardized formats without noticing the shape and the further we stray from standard, the more the shape of the image intrudes into the total appreciation.


I assume you were on some sort of a large boat to give this pleasing point of view. I think an even higher point of view would also be a nice image with the line of the jetty. I see that the English word is derived from the Old French word, jetee (excuse the lack of accents marks); is the modern French word the same?

Interesting how the city is built up above flood stage. Unless these are flood gates or locks? What is in the middle of the channel in the 2nd photo?

I was on the middle deck of the car ferry to the UK, there was an upper deck but it was closed A higher POV would have been a benefit.

Hi Cheryl, I think the raised harbour walls is just for ease of loading/unloading the larger ships that come here, The pier/jetties that you can see form an enclosed harbour, the mouth can be seen in image #2. It is also a river mouth, this is shown in image #1.
