How do children's photos in Europe work? I know the faces of kids are always blurred in magazines, but what if you are selling a photo of a child you took in a public place as art?

Again, depends on the country. A quick call to your local lawyer will answer that, but, in today's society taking pics of kids other than your own is iffy at best. In the case of making money with the picture or for public display, it would be a safeguard at the very least to get a signed model release from the parents.

Not correct in the U.S. As stated previously you cannot use them for advertising purposes. That does NOT mean that you cannot sell them, without a release.

Sad commentary about today's world

I would be very nervous if I see someone taking multiple pictures of my daughter without speaking to me first.

Even if it is legal (I do not know), probably good idea to talk to parents first before taking multiple pictures of children.

Very true, and that was the point I was trying to make. On a recent vacation, I saw a litle kid buried up to his neck in sand... super cute, but I dared not take the pic until I got permission from the parents.

In this case, I raised the camera 1/2 way up, smiled big and said "may I?" The father was super nice and nodded and said yes.

I took my 3-4 shots and offered to send them to him via email... his response?

Oh don't bother we have hundreds already... lol.

I would NOT have dared to press the shutter 1/2 way down without their consent, not matter what my legal rights were.

Hit the right parents/location and be prepared to get tackled and battered by a very angry and aggressive father... and I would not blame him one bit, becuase I could possibly do the same in his case. Its not the photographers that I worry about... its the perverts with a camera that require diligence against.

Agreed. I would call the police if someone were taking pics of my kids without first handing me a business card and asking permission, especially in any sort of beach/bathing suit type situation. Creepy and pervy at worst and downright rude at best. Whether it's legal or not doesn't mattter if you could face criminal charges as a result - you're better off taking the extra precaution than spending the night in the poky.
