Its a medium format camera, so in this market your going to be talking about Phase one, Hasselback and I suppose Pentax.

They are very different from Nikon and Canon but that is because they are very specialised!

this camera seems more for just doing portraits for large prints. it has a much larger sensor. Does anyone actually use one? i would be interested to hear how you like it. (not that I would ever buy one) =)

I normally don't redirect but try the Leica forum. There's a sub forum dedicated and active. It attracts quite a different membership than here.

You havent seen simplified controls on a digital until you've seen the m8 or m9. It's kinda of a characteristic of Leica design.

btw.... the S2 is an absolute dream to shoot. If you happen to be in the NYC north jersey area, I can point you to a dealer that has one for demo and rent.

no... if anything it was intended to be more field able than the MF offerings in competition. It has dslr handling with MF sensor and Leica design as well as their optics.

That is what I got from looking at it and the reviews I read, seems to be more for outside the studio than the other models in the MF range..

I am new to this digital slr stuff. I have been using my old Nikon N80 for the past 3 years so i didn't even know there was a small format, medium format and large format.

oh ok. i didn't see any long lenses that would be used for shooting sports and nature, thats why i assumed.

There's an Englishman around my parts who shoots with one. I've used one before..would probably rather have a Phase or Hasselblad though since the S2's sensor isn't really THAT much bigger than full frame. They say 60%, well FF 645 is almost 300% larger...

Medium and large format have been around way before digital was even dreamed up.

Yes, digital progresses the other way around than chemical film. :D

Film started with large format and ended with APS-C.

Digital started with APS-C and AFAIK still hasnt reached large format. Sensor size is expensive.

I dont expect medium format to be too widespread, ever, though, unless lenses for it get much cheaper.

Also, medium format is anything but just happiness. Small depth of field can be quite a pain for telephoto and macro applications.

Rankin uses one if you have heard of him

Buying a Leica over any modern DSLR is like buying an Apple instead of PC. You will pay more money for less. Except Leica probably has more charming feel to it than Apple computers.
