Lens and Flash Help

Ok, I currently have a Canon Rebel XT with the standard 18-55 lens. Any suggestions on what the first lens upgrade should be? We enjoy everything from portraits to landscapes. Here is a deal i have found locally

Canon 420EX Speedlight Flash AND EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III USM for $250.00!

Any suggestions would be helpful!

From what I have read, the 75-300 is not a very good lens, and probably is a waste of good funds.
