I recently acquired a 75-300 IS USM Canon lens. I got it out today just to take a test shot and noticed when I hold the shutter part way down I can hear a slight humming sound coming from the lens as if something is spinning. It only does this when the IS is turned on and it last about 3 seconds then it stops until I push the shutter button part way down again and it will go for another couple of seconds. The AF and everything appears to be working on the lens. I have a couple other IS lenses and can't hear anything from them. Is this normal or is there a problem?

It's normal, it's the IS. Hence why it does it when IS is turned on. It's just the IS doing it's job.

I caught on to the fact that it was likely the IS since that is only when it worked. I just couldn't figure out if it supposed to do it and if so why my other IS lenses don't do the same.

Some lenses have a louder IS sound that others....which is probably why this one sounded different from your other IS lenses.

This is completely normal and nothing to worry about.

Shorter focal length lenses don't have to move the IS correction elements nearly as far or as fast, as IS in long focal length lenses.
