Lexmark: another one going down....

The move, which Lexmark says should save it about $85 million next year, comes at a tough time for the printing industry. Consumers, worried about the economy, are holding off on purchases of PCs and printers. And there are concerns that printing is experiencing a secular decline as users buy more mobile devices and opt to keep their content in a digital form.

The 'give away the printer dirt cheap, to sell the expensive ink' business model seems to have some, uh, flaws.

Kind of like the 'give away the disc of photos, so you have nothing else to sell' retail photographer business model.

Wish it'd have worked for them.

As competition is eliminated from the marketplace its a hit on us consumers.

Lexmark printers were the absolute worst.

I had one All-in-one, it dies after 2 years. Yeah, pretty terrible. But then again, friends top-of-the-line Canon IPF died in 8 months only having print 190-some prints.

Never had any problems with my Epson.

Yeah each to his/her own, its just sad to see competition (that benefits us all) leave the marketplace

El Cheapo, low quality goods does not necessarily constitute competition.

Besides there are plenty of other inkjet printer makers remaining that competition has in no way been significantly diminished.

The ironic thing is that sometimes it is cheaper to by the same or newer model because they price ink so far. And this by no means is limited to Lexmark but I must say that Lexmark charges an arm and a leg for their ink. I know it's not politically or environmentally correct. So for to save money, I have my cartridges refilled at Costco. Refiills of course are not as good as the originals but for ordinary print like fMS Office documents, they do well. Pictures are a different thing though. Yes the business model is flawed.

PS Back in the day, HP was selling a brand new printer with a free Lord of the Rings backpack. Ironically, the ink replacements cost $5 more than the printer and backpack. Guess what I did?

Ironic. I had a lexmark printer that broke down literally on like the 5th use.

Unfortunately I Never had the opportunity of using Lexmark printers... I kinda just gave up on buying printers and stopped printing my own photos because of my bad experience with Epson printers.

I just hope Epson goes out of business with their smart chips that waste ink and not let you print so they can sell more ink scam, also shuts down your printer after set amounts of prints so you can pay to have it maintained even thou nothing is wrong with it.

Was Lexmark anything like this?
