Lighting?

Ok, I do mainly all reptile photography, snakes the most. With my Canon DSLR Rebel I am having some issues lighting wise.

If I use the flash its waaayyyy too much light, without not quite enough with the two 100w flouros I have setup......should I just up the amount of light in the light box or what?

I really dont wanna Photoshop them to make them look lit correctly, I would like to do it in the photograph as I take them, if that makes sense....LOL

I would look into either a macro flash ($400 - $800) or an LED ring light ($75 - $200).
