One thing that has not been mentioned that you need to be aware of is image quality. There are lots of 70-300mm lenses out there with varying image quality. The same can be said of 2X TC's. Putting a top quality 2X TC on a top quality, think L lens, can result in some acceptably sharp photos. Putting a consumer grade 2X TC on a consumer grade lens can be a crap shoot. A TC will not only magnify the image but will magnify every fault of the lens. Soft lenses become softer, CA increases, etc. You may be better off shooting at 300mm and cropping than adding the TC.
