There's no reason why you couldn't have turned the camera and captures the entire bird.
As it is, you've got lots of empty space and half the bird.

Good job capturing a difficult subject. The subject seems suitably sharp and well exposed. It is too bad about the composition. I wouldn't necessarily take this as a portrait shot, but recomposing so there is less space on the right and the bird looks across the open space to the left might be more pleasing.
