i got a 70-300mm lens for christmas and i dont understand what the macro focus switch is used for.

It limits the focus range that the lens can focus on, so that you are always focusing in the macro (close) range rather than letting the autofocus hunt over a large focus range that macro lenses are capable of.

thanks, does it work better when you are zoomed in on something big thats far away like a boat, or something small thats close like an apple?

Something close, often times just a few inches from the camera. Usually when taking a macro, you get as close as possible to the object.

Your lens should have the minimum distance needed to take a macro photo printed on it (or in the manual). Usually it ranges from a few inches to a few feet. Also, consider a tripod and a remote like the Nikon ML-L3 to reduce camera shake and increase sharpness.
