Ok, I dropped the ball on this one and blew out the highlights.:banghead:
Question, is it worth another 45 minute drive, one way, for a retake?

If you go back do a bracketed 5 frame exposure for a HDR. That should solve the problem of the high dynamic range of the shot.
whoa whoa whoa.

one does not simply use HDR in the manner it was intended.

Laf! I know many use it to excess but in my opinion, a well done HDR does not look like a HDR.

No I would not drive 45 minutes one way unless that is a trophy of a picture to you.

I would make some photoshop magic happen before considering that drive again.

I think you should drive 45 minutes both ways. That doesn't look like a very comfortable place to spend the night. ;)

Thanks but even Photoshop wizardry can't bring back non existent detail. I burnt that snow into the texture of new white paint.
As far as HDR? Hmmm... I've never had any interest in even exploring it. Maybe I'll have to do a little reading

When done in the traditional / "intended" way as implied above, it simply allows you to pack in blacker blacks and whiter whites in the same photo without blocking or blowing either of them. Without otherwise looking different than a normal photo. Think of it like artificially giving your camera a wider histogram x axis than it had before.

The cartoonish hand drawn look people often refer to as HDR is more commonly a result of some HDR as a first step, yes, but mostly the look comes from a semi-related process of tone-mapping, which is more like using algorithms to apply something like the photoshop curves tool locally across the image in complicated ways and does not itself increase dynamic range.

Plain dynamic range itself will simply give you a grayer version of your same image but without highlights being blown or shadows blocked. Which you can then edit to your liking because you have the data you need.

Good point.

That's nice... I'd probably be back out there. Usually if something keeps popping back into my head then I'll be back to working on it further.

What about a somewhat different time of day? Noticed the shadow is about halfway down the doors in the front, maybe try it when there'd be less shadow? or more? or evening? different time of year? This is the kind of subject I'd find worth photographing more than once.
