Marathon pictures?

So the Chicago Marathon runs right by the street where I live. I think it would take little effort to go and try to take some pictures of the event. Yet, I've never taken any pictures of any sort of sport (unless we can count chess as a sport).

I would like to know if anyone's had any sort of experience with this and any tips would be appreciated.

I'll be using a 50d with a lens that could be (300mm f/4 L IS, 100mm f/2.8 macro, 24-85mm 3.5-4.5, or 10-22 EF-S!)
