Out here in the middle of Eastern Oregon, there isn't a sound. No breeze rustling leaves. No insects chirping in the night. No distant road sounds. Nothing. The only sounds are the noises you make. If you stand still, the world is silent. It was the most complete silence I've ever experienced.
This landscape is fascinating and eerie. The painted hills themselves are inhospitable to any type of plant life. The clay absorbs all the water, and just inches beneath is a hard crust.
