This building was originally built for a Masonic lodge in the early 1860s, but the divisions of the Civil War brought down the lodge and it closed.

B.P.O.E stands for "Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks". The lack of any Masonic symbology would lead me to believe that it never was a Masonic lodge.

All of that aside, It's a great picture.

No it was originally a Masonic lodge. The facade was changed in the 1920s I think. I'm sure you can still find original Masonic markers on the original red brick building.

The obvious Egyptian motif still shows through. The masonic symbols were probably removed and the Elks put their own embellishments on.
