Just finished up the processing on an event I covered last week; a full-on Venetian-style masquerade ball. It was an interesting event to be sure, but due to an "issue" between the event planners and the venue management, my portrait station wound up being crammed into part of the restaurant area with VERY little room to work, however, I'm reasonably pleased with the overall results. As always, thoughts, critique and suggestions for improvement always gratefully accepted.

Haha, the marionettes are awesome.

I have a suggestion that may or may not have been possible depending on your camera/flash set up, but I think that in the photos of them walking down the red carpet it would have been more visually interesting to raise your ISO, use a slower shutter speed, or use a wider aperture to get more of the ambient light, and then adjust your flash accordingly. In some photos you can kind of see a bit of the background (like in #3), and although the background may not be that pleasing, it does look better to have some sort of context back there to help ground the image. Otherwise, it looks like they're just walking on a red carpet coming from an abyss. I hope that makes sense.

The last photo in the red carpet series looks very well balanced in terms of just enough ambient light and just enough flash.

Thanks Rex! i did drag the shutter for some, but the problem is that (at least at the start of the event when it was lighter out) you got too much background detail, all the looky-loos, bums, etc, hanging our across the street, so I figured in this case, less was more.

Thoughts...I want to go!!
