Hi Brian,

I am no good at self portraits, so my opinions should be taken with a a grain of salt.

for the focus, put anything as a stand-in where your head will be, focus on that, and then switch your camera to manual focus. Your focus should stay spot-on after that (especially at f8)

There is too much grey in this image. you need to use lighting (or different tones) to separate you from the background better.

The upward tilt of your chin seems a bit awkward. drop you chin a bit.

Your eyes look a but dull. they seem to be in shadow and lack a strong catchlight.

I am a fan of horizontal orientation for certain portraits, but they usually have some asymmetry. Here, you are posed fairly square to the camera. I don't think you used the negative space well in this image. You would probably be better off with traditional portrait orientation.

Desi gave great advice.

When I do mine, I use one of my flash stands as me. I put it where I will be sitting/standing. Focus on it. Switch to manual to lock it. Then go sit and trigger with remote.

Next thing is your lighting. As pointed out, very flat and dull.

What was your lighting setup. Tell what that was and we can help you alter it accordingly.

Sit up straight! Also, you need more dynamic lighting (as others have said). Just fire a flash camera left or right diffused through an umbrella or bounced off a wall and the lighting will be much more interesting.

The photo is a little flat - the highlights need to be brought up a little. I'd also go with a slightly lighter background.

My trick for focus is to sit with the camera in the position in which I will sit for the photo and manually focus on the tripod bolt where the camera will be mounted and then return the camera to the tripod for the exposure.

Biggest tip don't weir a gray shirt when shooting against a gray back ground or a wight background that is lit so that it will look gray.
