What a puzzle.
I don't understand how the areas at the red arrows are in focus and those at the blue arrows are not.

Yep.. I think so. I'm guessing it's a perspective issue/optical illusion which is causing the confusion.

It looks like it goes in focus then out then in and then out again.
Crazy.

The plane of focus is not parallel with the stem of the plant. It seems the camera was angled down at this subject slightly, because the focus plane is nearer lower and crosses through the stem midway up.
