A mental exercise on my part to see if I understand this process...

The goal is a focus-stacked, HDR macro image.

I would take my photos starting from the front of my subject insect to capture the closest portion of the bug, and take a number of exposures (under exposed, properly exposed and over exposed), then shift the DOF focus back to where the first set leaves off, take another exposure set and so until I have have the DOF coverage I want.

I would then HDR process each set of DOF, and then finally focus-stack the HDR's.

Or....is it better to focus-stack each under exposed, then each proper exposed and then over exposed, then HDR those...or does it matter?

Welcome to the endless problem of combining two post processing techniques that give lossy and unrepeatable results.

I have this all the time. Classic case is HDR panoramas. Do you do the panorama first or the HDR. In either case one program needs to work around the errors introduced in the image by the other.

I've tried and drove myself nuts. I didn't know it was a common issue lol.
