A bit old news but I couldn't find an existing thread..... please merge if I missed it.

I still feel that the micro 4/3 system still has catching up to do with the likes of DSLRs but for a system that has really only been around since 2009, I think its making some great strides to the efforts of Panasonic and Olympus with some additional support from third-party vendors that are starting to adopt the new mount. But I found it interesting to see that a professional getty photographer found it adequate enough...

Pro shooter to cover London 2012 using Panasonic Lumix DMC-G5: Digital Photography Review

Looks like the infant format is starting to grow up a bit.

Panasonic is an Official Sponsor of the 2012 London Olympics, and them hiring Getty shooter Dean Mouhtaropoulos is going to be a pretty good advertising and promotional stunt I think. As an official sponsor, Panasonic is going to host an Olympic Games Image Gallery at the Getty Gallery. Panasonic is furnishing Mr. Mouhtaropoulos with the new camera they are hyping, the new Panasonic LUMIX G5, and a set of lenses, all of which Mouhtaropoulos will use in place of his regular equipment. Panasonic is using their sponsorship of the Olympics pretty well, I would say. They also plan to have a couple of web galleries on-line, focusing on their products.

I am guessing that Panasonic has payed tens of millions of dollars to become an official Olympic sponsor. I wonder how much they payed Mouhtaropoulos to shoot with the brand-new LUMIX G5. I've had a Lumix for some time now, as has my ex-wife. Both of the cameras took dumps on us,after light use. Kind of disappointing. Both were expensive, top-line models.

Gotta agree with Derrel on the marketing ploy thing. MFT is nice, but action is one thing that it is just not meant for. Continuous auto-focus with a mirrorless system is all-around horrible, and most of these lose auto-focus and metering when shooting more than a few FPS. They might be good for some crowd shots or sports where the athletes aren't moving very much, but no way is MFT going to compete with DSLRs in full-fledged sports photography.

Note.... I did not intend this to be a DSLR vs mirrorless debate.... Of course its driven by marketing. Not like the others haven't done before. Just pointing out that the system is growing and that continues to improve. Its not all that common that you see an evolving idea or design in this type of product market.

Also, sponsoring the Olympics is a GOOD thing....

This place is full of it at times....
